Bryan Bourne has recently retired from the "The President's Own" United States Marine Band after nearly 30 years of active service. The last 23 years he was the band’s Principal Trombone. In that capacity he performed in the Marine Concert Band, as solo trombone with the White House Orchestra and on many chamber music concerts. Bryan also performed in a number of episodes of the PBS series “Music at the White House,” which features many of the country’s finest artists from many different musical genres. He was a featured soloist on many concerts including 6 Concert tours amassing over a total of 200 solo performances of 35 different solo works. Bryan is principal trombone with the Washington Concert Opera, the Chesapeake Orchestra and the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra and was principal trombone with the RAI Orchestra in Turin, Italy in 1981. Bryan was second trombonist with the Baltimore Opera Orchestra for 22 years, and has performed with the Kennedy Center Opera and Ballet Orchestras and the National Symphony Orchestra.
While in the Marine Band, Bryan was very involved in the educational outreach development. Performing as part of the “Music in the Schools” program as well as master classes throughout the country, while “on tour” during the Marine Band’s annual 50 day concert tour. Bryan Bourne has taught low brass (trombone, euphonium, and tuba) at St. Mary's College of Maryland since 1990. At St. Mary’s College heconducts the Brass Choir, Trombone Choir, and coaches brass chamber music. His students have won positions in many fine universities and conservatories as well as orchestras and military bands.
Bryan received his bachelor of music degree with high honors from Indiana University in 1979, having studied with Lewis Van Haney and Keith Brown. In 1989 he completed his master of music degree at Catholic University graduating with highest honors, studying with Milton Stevens of the National Symphony Orchestra and David Fedderly, principal tuba of the Baltimore Symphony.
In addition to his band and orchestral experience, Bryan continues to perform regularly with The Washington Symphonic Brass and Dominion Brass, both of which he was a founding member. The Washington Symphonic Brass has just released their 7th CD, with Bryan performing in the solo chair on a number of works.
Bryan has just released his first solo CD entitled “Transitions”. The album features many new compositions and arrangements for solo trombone and strings arranged especially for him. Bryan plays Bach trombones exclusively (models 42B and 36) on his recording and has just recently been selected to perform as a Bach Artist and Clinician.
